   Determinant is a men’s apparel brand which creates functional work-life wear to empower modern professionals. DETERMINANT’s direct to consumer business is driven by global e-commerce, as well as retail presence in China and Vietnam. As a fast growing apparel brand, DETERMINANT has the need for higher logistics efficiency and better inventory data accuracy. After engaging with us we have identified RFID as the answer to the above and we have plan to roll out RFID into their entire supply chain, from factories to retail stores. This phase of RFID technologies development included both Goods Inbounding and Inventory Stocktaking. DETERMINANT has utilized the technologies to achieve an efficient inventory flow in retail stores.

RFID application on Goods Inbounding

      Traditionally, DETERMINANT relied on manual labor to unbox and scan the product’s barcodes one by one upon arrival of goods. It took 120 minutes on average to complete goods inbounding manually. This made the stock in-bound less organized and relatively inefficient. To tackle the significant efficiency and accuracy problems, RFID solution was introduced to DETERMINANT.

      With the adoption of Summation Solutions RFID application, product details inside the cartons are checked and confirmed through scanning with flexible RFID handheld scanners provided after arrival at retail stores. With RFID, stocks are scanned in batches from distance, and no longer required to be taken out and scanned one by one. The process is now completed in 15 minutes, almost 90% shorter than before. Assuming there are 50 stores with twice-weekly goods inbounding per store, there could be an annual saving of almost 10,000 hours in this process. In addition, DETERMINANT’s manual error is reduced with accuracy raised close to 100%.

RFID application on Inventory Stocktaking

In the past, DETERMINANT used to conduct manual stock checking once a month and thorough stocktaking every six months. Owing to the inefficiency, shop keepers were required to stay behind after store opening hours in a retail store of about 50 square meters, shop keepers in DETERMINANT had to spend 5 hours counting and checking 2,500 garment items. The process is extremely slow and tiring. It further led to dissatisfaction of shop keepers, especially during peak seasons.

SUMMATION SOLUTIONS helped DETERMINANT to apply RFID solutions on inventory stocktaking. Workers now only need to use RFID handheld scanners to scan through batches of items from a distance, which takes around 30 minutes in the same scale store. Not only does it reduce tiring manual workload, but it also enhances accuracy, the primary goal for stocktaking. In a year with stock taking twice per month, total stock taking time is shortened by 5,400 hours (675 regular working days) Thorough stocktaking now takes place more often than 2 times per month owing to the precious time saved, bringing the accuracy of inventory tracking to another level.

The application of RFID system posed an initial challenge to the brand’s retail operation and management. SUMMATION SOLUTIONS knew clearly that it is never easy to start adopting new technology. After the initial phase of the project on stocks inbounding and inventory stocktaking, DETERMINANT’s operational efficiency and accuracy showed a substantial improvement. “With RFID, stocks inbounding is now done from a two-hour process to a 15 minutes task. When it comes to stocktaking, it only takes half an hour to complete whereas it used to be 5 hours long. Our accuracy in stocktaking has been maintained is getting close to 100%,” Queena Ye, Store Supervisor of DETERMINANT stated.
